Nate hammered the final finishing nail into the church door casement and quickly ran his hand over the wood to make sure the nail was embedded properly. Satisfied, he stood and began gathering his tools. Placing his granddad’s nailset into the tool box, Nate grinned. “If he could see me now,” Nate shook his head at the thought. “Granddad would be shocked to see me helping out with church maintenance.”
Sandy reflected as she changed little Carter’s diapers, “I wonder how many times I’ve done this?” She smiled. As the oldest of seven children, Sandy had been assigned diaper duty more times than she could count. Now she added to her diaper count by volunteering in the church nursery each Sunday.
If you had told Nate and Sandy earlier in their lives that one day they would put their various abilities to work in God’s Kingdom, they may not have believed it. We go about our daily lives, never guessing that one day our experiences and our skills will contribute to Christ’s work in our world. As practice hones our various skills, the Holy Spirit is at work in our hearts through his Word - gently guiding us into a deeper and deeper relationship with Jesus. It’s this relationship that evokes genuinely heartfelt service!
From God’s Heart to Yours
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10 ESV).
From Your Heart to God’s
Take a moment to consider the many ways by which your Lord has prepared you for heartfelt service in his Kingdom. Humbly thank him for the skills he’s given to you. Then ask Jesus for opportunities to use your abilities - always - for his glory!
